Steve graduated from the University of South Carolina in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science in Criminology and Criminal Justice. After graduating, he went to work for a large insurance company as a claims adjuster. During his time there, he handled commercial liability claims including automobile, premises liability, and construction defects.
He left the insurance industry in 2010 to attend law school at the University of South Carolina, and graduated with a Juris Doctor, cum laude, in 2013. During and after law school, Steve worked for a litigation defense firm focusing on governmental liability. His primary practice areas there included civil rights litigation, constitutional law, employment law, law enforcement defense, and personal injury. He is a member of the South Carolina Bar and is admitted to practice in the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina, as well as the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Outside of work, he enjoys cooking and spending time with his wife and two daughters. If he is not working or spending time with his family, he can usually be found on a fishing boat in Charleston trying to hone his skills as an offshore fisherman.
