Born and raised in Kingstree, SC, Joel graduated high school in 1998 and attended Wofford College. Active in both social functions and scholastic recruitment while at Wofford, he received his BA in English in 2002. Joel attended the University of South Carolina School of Law and received his Juris Doctor in May of 2005.
After law school, Joel spent a year clerking for the Honorable J. Ernest Kinard, Jr. in the Fifth Judicial Circuit of South Carolina. Joel then joined the firm Davidson & Lindemann in July of 2006 and became a partner in 2013. In January of 2018, Joel helped form Lindemann Davis & Hughes, P.A. with his law partners Andrew Lindemann and Jim Davis.
In his practice, Joel advises his clients and practices in the area of insurance defense, focusing on governmental liability and personal injury defense. In addition, Joel works in construction liability claims, sewage, stormwater and land use claims, school liability and other areas of insurance defense as well. Joel has made appearances before the South Carolina Procurement Review Panel, local Magistrate Courts, Circuit Courts throughout the state, the South Carolina Court of Appeals, the United States District Court and the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. Joel is also a certified mediator and enjoys assisting parties come to a fair resolution of their civil disputes.
Aside from his law practice, Joel assists in staff and attorney recruitment and development and social planning. In his time away from the office, Joel spends time with his wife, his two children, and his golden retriever. He enjoys his assortment of Weber products, traveling, the occasional round of golf and coaching his son’s tee-ball team. Joel regularly attends sporting events at the University of South Carolina. He is an active member of Trenholm Road United Methodist Church, where he has served as a Sunday School Teacher, class president and headed several committees.
As a lawyer, Joel enjoys the challenges that litigation presents but strives to maintain a level of professionalism and courtesy with his fellow lawyers, judges, clients and legal staff. As a mediator, Joel appreciates the challenges of managing expectations, facilitating discussion and accomplishing final resolution of difficult disputes.
